The project “Collective Reticulárea: Communal Cartographies” by artist Miguel Braceli creates new connections across the Latin American continent. Artists, educators and students from Venezuela have developed a collective artwork that generates a new cartography of the continent beyond geopolitical borders.

The participatory exhibition will be on view from April 11 to June 1, 2024 at the Fundación Sala Mendoza in Caracas, Venezuela. The project of the art platform LA ESCUELA___ reactivates the artistic and pedagogical legacy of Venezuelan-German artist Gego in a contemporary context.

Artists and interested parties worldwide were invited to submit modular pieces that were collectively assembled into a large rhizomatic structure. The aim is to stimulate public discourse on collaborative and pedagogical strategies in contemporary art and to foster networking and exchange across borders.

“Considering the node as a design object, but also as an exchange space is a way of creating relationships in the context of displacements and diasporas; this allows us to learn from Gego’s expansive work, to redimension the Reticulárea as a political communal territory through the link.” Miguel Braceli.

In addition to the spatial installation, selected archival materials from the Fundación Gego will be presented, showcasing Gego’s teaching projects at the Universidad Central de Venezuela from 1959-1967 and her renowned seminar on spatial relationships from 1966 to 1977.

LA ESCUELA___

LA ESCUELA___ is a growing art platform that creates and strengthens translocal connections through collective learning experiences at the intersection of art and education. LA ESCUELA___ was founded by artist Miguel Braceli together with the international Siemens Stiftung and understands art as education and education as collective learning in public space. Its aim is to address the social, political and ecological challenges of specific places through artistic practices on site.
