FEBRACE 2025: Students take center stage with their innovative projects to combat climate change

Siemens Stiftung awarded students from the Escola Sesi Djalma Pessoa school for their project on the effectiveness of coconut fiber biomats in nutrient recovery from fire-damaged soils

At FEBRACE 2025, the Brazilian science and engineering fair for young talents hosted at the Universidade de São Paulo, Siemens Stiftung awarded a student project that highlighted a creative, local and implementable solution for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The “Jovens Cientistas Pelo Clima” (Young Scientists for the Climate) award, organized by Anna Vater, Project Manager at Siemens Stiftung was presented to students from Escola Sesi Djalma Pessoa school for evaluating the effectiveness of coconut fiber biomats in nutrient recovery from fire-damaged soils. At the fair, students presented projects that offered solutions to a wide range of climate change challenges: From early flood warning systems, and innovative ways to reduce evaporation in water reservoirs, to sustainable biofertilizers to raise carbon sequestration of palm trees.

Initiative for practical learning spaces
Badin Borde, Senior Project Manager, Siemens Stiftung participated in the panel: “Project-Based Learning and Climate Change Education”, discussing the significance of integrating STEM and Climate Change Education to address local climatic challenges and develop tailored solutions for adapting to its impacts. “We need to expand students’ horizons by taking climate change education beyond theoretical concepts and traditional learning methods. Our approach is to train teachers to develop lessons grounded in local contexts and oriented toward action that empower students to take on the role of critical thinkers and responsible problem-solvers”.
São Paulo is part of our STEM + Territory initiative that strengthens our commitment to provide quality STEM education in Latin America. Siemens Stiftung has joined forces with the Laboratório de Sistemas Integráveis Tecnológico at the University of São Paulo to develop innovative learning spaces in São Paulo. We are working with public school teachers, students and community members to encourage project and problem-based learning for students. At the heart of this project is developing cost-efficient and innovative learning spaces that can be easily replicated in São Paulo‘s public schools. Students are encouraged and equipped to develop classroom solutions to respond to climate change in Brazil’s regional context.

New digital offer for teachers
As a part of the project, a new online course “Project-Based Learning and Climate Change”, offering up–to-date scientific content has been published. The free course inlcudes practical examples and step-by-step guides to implement climate mitigation and adaptation projects:
